Pandavas were five brothers, namely Yudhishthira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva who were kings ruling Hastinapur.
Yudhishthira, the eldest brother, was generous in donating people who came for alms at his ‘Daanshala’ daily.
One day, Yudhishthira and his four brothers were present at Daanshala for providing donations to people. They were about to close the Daanashala. That time a poor man came there from a distant place and asked for alms. But Yudhisthira asked the poor man to come the next day for alms.
The poor man became disappointed and moved away. Bhima, who was the younger brother of Yudhishthira, was disheartened by the act of his elder brother and thought it was not right to delay the charity as tomorrow is never known.
Bhima wanted to teach a lesson to his elder brother and started beating the drums. The heavy sound of the drums used to signify Pandava’s victory whenever they conquered any country or gained their rule over any Kingdom.
Yudhishthira was astonished at the sound of the drums as it was played without any reason. Yudhishthira asked Bhima for the reason for his beating the drums.
Bhima said, “Oh King! No one has ever had the option to win time, including the Gods and Goddesses. But it is marvelous that you have done it and you have got victory over time. So I started beating the drums to inform you about your victory”.
Bhima reminded Yudhishthira that “The work to be done tomorrow, has to be done today itself since tomorrow is not known”.
Yudhishthira understood Bhima’s narration and realized his fault. He felt ashamed of his act of delaying charity. He called that poor man immediately and fulfilled his desires.
